Abiquiu Road Trip Adventure

Inspired by a Local

If you’re inspired by the legendary American artist Georgia O’Keeffe’s artwork, we highly recommend embarking on a road trip through the breathtaking landscapes of Abiquiu, New Mexico! This road trip itinerary is filled with adventure, stunning nature, and artistic inspiration by O’Keeffe and many other local artists. AVD’s very own Ursula Luchetti-Jordan, a native of Abiquiu and a jeweler in her own right, shares this itinerary—a truly magical way to spend a day in her inspiring hometown!

Rise and Shine: Start the Journey

Wake up with the sun! As the sun rises over Santa Fe, it's time to hit the road. Depart Santa Fe bright and early, ready to take in the serenity of the drive. From the moment you leave the city limits, you'll be treated to breathtaking vistas of the New Mexican landscape, setting the stage for a memorable and full day ahead. The 48-mile drive takes only about an hour each way, leaving plenty of time to explore!

Before you embark on your journey, fuel up for the day ahead with a pit stop at Bode's Mercantile—a historical gem serving the area since 1893! Indulge in one of their famous breakfast burritos loaded with all your favorite fillings, and remember to stock up on snacks and plenty of water for the road! You’ll find an abundance of locally sourced treasures and products in their gift shop, just waiting to be discovered.

Nature Immersion: Hike into Echo Amphitheater

Mother Nature spoils you on this drive, and your first stop to take in the unique terrain is the Echo Amphitheater! Park your car (there is a $5 parking fee) and journey off on an easy hike into the heart of the canyon. Enjoy quiet moments to take in the breathtaking views, and let the calm of the landscape wash over you as you listen to the echoes of nature's sounds. Past hikers have even shared that the journey into the canyon is something of a spiritual experience. It's a perfect place to meditate or set the tone for your adventure day in Abiquiu.

Exploration in Abiquiu Pueblo

Once the sights and sounds of nature rejuvenate you, return to Abiquiu for a taste of history and culture. Explore the Abiquiu Pueblo, home to ancient adobe ruins and historic churches. While you're there, we recommend a visit to Bosshard Gallery, Georgia O'Keeffe House Museum (requires a reservation), Santo Thomas Catholic Church, and the postcard-worthy Penitente Morada.

Artistic Inspiration: Georgia O’Keeffe and Nest Gallery

Georgia O’Keeffe is a household name in this part of the world—and for good reason! She made a point to integrate herself with the locals and their traditions and was a patron to the community. The unique landscapes and vibrant colors of the Southwest inspired several of her breathtaking artworks. O'Keeffe found solace and creative energy in Abiquiu's dreamy desert vistas and mysterious, rugged terrain. She created many of her iconic paintings depicting the region's natural beauty, such as "Black Mesa Landscape, New Mexico," during her time in Abiquiu, where she settled in 1949. O'Keeffe's home and studio in Abiquiu now serve as a museum, preserving her legacy and celebrating her artistic contributions to the area.

Don't miss a visit to her home when you are in town, and for even more artistic exploration, stop by Nest Gallery to discover the work of local artists. You'll find a wealth of creative treasures from paintings to sculptures to turquoise jewelry. Take your time to peruse and connect with the many one-of-a-kind creations—a wonderful opportunity to purchase gifts for yourself or your loved ones!

Local Feast at Abiquiu Inn

Once you've explored to your heart's content, don't miss stopping by the Abiquiu Inn for a local feast! Indulge in the flavors and hospitality of the Inn as you savor local favorites like chicken fried steak with green chili gravy and house-made enchiladas. Admire the artwork adorning the walls, many created by local artists participating in the annual Abiquiu Studio Tour. Enjoy the rotating art shows in the upstairs gallery and the dining hall before returning to Santa Fe.
