Wake up with the sun! As the sun rises over Santa Fe, it's time to hit the road. Depart Santa Fe bright and early, ready to take in the serenity of the drive. From the moment you leave the city limits, you'll be treated to breathtaking vistas of the New Mexican landscape, setting the stage for a memorable and full day ahead. Before you embark on your journey, fuel up for the day ahead with a pit stop at Bode's Mercantile—a historical gem serving the area since 1893! Indulge in one of their famous breakfast burritos loaded with all your favorite fillings, and remember to stock up on snacks and plenty of water for the road! You’ll find an abundance of locally sourced treasures and products in their gift shop, just waiting to be discovered.

Nature Immersion: Hike into Echo Amphitheater

Mother Nature spoils you on this drive, and your first stop to take in the unique terrain is the Echo Amphitheater! Park your car (there is a $5 parking fee) and journey on a leisurely hike into the heart of the canyon. Enjoy quiet moments to take in the breathtaking views, and let the calm of the landscape wash over you as you listen to the echoes of nature's sounds. Past hikers have even shared that the journey into the canyon is something of a spiritual experience. It's a perfect place to meditate or set the tone for your adventure day in Abiquiu. Before setting off on your journey, please ensure to check for any road closures or traffic updates. Stay informed to avoid delays and ensure a smooth and enjoyable road trip!

Artistic Inspiration: Georgia O’Keeffe and Nest Gallery

Georgia O’Keeffe is a household name in this part of the world—and for good reason! She made a point to integrate herself with the locals and their traditions and was a patron to the community. The Southwest's unique landscapes and vibrant colors inspired several of her breathtaking artworks. O'Keeffe found solace and creative energy in Abiquiu's dreamy desert vistas and mysterious, rugged terrain. She created iconic paintings depicting the region's natural beauty, such as "Black Mesa Landscape, New Mexico," in Abiquiu, where she settled in 1949. O'Keeffe's home and studio in Abiquiu now serve as a museum, preserving her legacy and celebrating her artistic contributions to the area.

Don't miss a visit to her home when you are in town, and for even more artistic exploration, stop by Nest Gallery to discover the work of local artists. You'll find many creative treasures, from paintings to sculptures to turquoise jewelry. Take your time to peruse and connect with the many one-of-a-kind creations—a wonderful opportunity to purchase gifts for yourself or your loved ones!
